We propose a performative public space along the perimeter of the harbour where new events will gather large numbers of people. It is a sloping pubic landscape that will give a new urban identity to both urban and maritime space. Helsinki's southern harbour area is an ideal place to host new activities for several reasons:
01.LOCATION it is located in the middle of the historical centre which is full of tourists, local people and travellers.
02. VIEWS one of the most attractive things about the harbour are the views over the sea, the islands and the ships arriving/departing from the city.
03. SAFETY it is a controlled and easily accessible space. The new topographical conditions (slopes) will provide a variety of possibilities to host different types of outdoor activities, events and activity configurations depending on the time of day and season. The organization of the available space depends on the nature of the action.
In this context, two types of organizations are proposed:
01. FRAGMENTED When the event activity is dispersed throughout the port area several event lines are created.
02. COMPACT The activity is located and concentrated in a specific place. Each type of organization uses different areas of the port. Careful planning of these activities can activate the harbour with a large number of people in different seasons, which is an important attraction for Helsinki citizens and tourists.
Slope Up! is a spatial continuum. It is characterized as a "cushion of ideas", an "active mechanism", an open system, a playground, a way of colonizing space.
